Effective Date: August 25, 2018

Shuffle respects your privacy, and we understand the importance of the information you entrust to us. This Privacy Policy describes our practices in detail, but to make it simple to follow, we have a succint version with the notable things.

The Quick Version

  1. We do not have any advertisements or brands, and therefore do not share your information or data that you provide to us.
  2. We only use information that you provide us, and do not collect third-party information about you.
  3. Your profile and anything you publish on Shuffle is public by default, and can be viewed by others, unless you modify the default visibility setting.

The Agreement

This policy describes the types of information we collect when you use this Website, how we use and protect that information, how long we retain it, and with whom we share it. It also explains what your rights and options are as they pertain to privacy. By visiting this website or using our Service, you consent to our collection and use of your information as described in this Privacy Policy.

Voluntary & Personally Identifiable Information (PII)

Once you register or accept an invite, we ask you for certain information that is necessary for Shuffle to be useful to you. This information is voluntarily provided to us by you. As of the effective date of this Agreement, we ask you to provide your name, email address, location, and preferred gender pronoun, a unique username, profile picture and information regarding your interests. Any information you choose to add to your profile, like collections, summaries or stories, is entirely voluntary, but will be viewable by other users and visitors to the website, and may generate content for other users whose interests and expertise are similar to your own. You may also submit additional content by creating posts, including pictures, videos, audio recordings, and written materials, which will be associated with your username and profile. Please keep in mind that when you add publish content to your profile, publish a post or add basic details such as profile picture and name, that all of these are public by default, and thus viewable to anybody until you modify the relevant visibility setting. Finally, we might also record information about different behaviors or functionalities that you use on the site, to help us understand how Shuffle is being used, and provide a better service to you.

General Technical Information

When you use Shuffle, we or some of the services we use on the site, may collect some general technical information. This is anonymous in nature and does not identify you as an individual. This is collected through the use of cookies, tokens or pixels and maybe stored in log files. They typically record certain information such as your computer IP address, mobile device, browser type, ISP or carrier name, and the URL of the last webpage you visited before visiting our website. When you log on to your account, we will record your computer IP address, and may tie it to your specific account. Under ordinary circumstances, an IP address recorded in isolation is not PII under the standard definition of the term. However, it may become PII when it is combined with other information, as in this case.

Your Communication With Us

When you communicate with us (via email, phone, through the Shuffle website, or otherwise), we may maintain a record of your communication.

Using your Information

Shuffle connects you with others who share the same interest as you, and as such, the PII or the information that we collect from and about you to enable us to do that. We may also use PII for the following purposes: (a) to verify your identity while logging in; (b) to help you locate other users with similar interests and expertise; and (c) to otherwise perform functions associated with our service. Any information that we gather about how you might (or might not) be using certain functionalities helps us improve our service and features. We use General Technical Information to gain insights on how our users use our site in order to further enhance our service, as well as to help debug incase of reported issues. Finally, a word on emails. We send two kinds of emails - administrative/transactional and informational. The former includes information related to your account, and cannot be turned off. The latter includes newsletters, notifications, and updates about the service. You may stop receiving emails from us by letting us know or clicking the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email.

Data & Third Parties

Shuffle does not make money from selling advertising on the site, serving ads to you, or selling information about our users to third parties, including advertisers, data brokers, search engines, or anyone else. We may share some of your information, including personal information, with third parties under limited circumstances: a) If you tell us that is okay to do so. b) If we use a third party service to provide some some functionality, for which transfer of data might be required. For example, sharing your email with a service that we use to sends emails. We always try to ensure that the service has robust data privacy protections. At this point, we use the following services: Heroku, Intercom, Postmark, Revue, Segment, Mixpanel, Google Analytics, NewRelic and Sentry. c) If we believe that we need to do so to comply with any legal obligations. In those cases, we will do so if it is our last resort. d) Finally, we may reserve and have the right to disclose any information about you or your use of our site without your prior permission (though we will aim to notify you as soon as we can), if we in good faith believe that such action is necessary to: protect and defend the rights, property or safety of our company or its affiliates, other users of the site, or the public; or to enforce our Terms of Use. e) If we are involved in a merger, acquisition, bankruptcy, reorganization or sale of assets such that your information would be transferred or become subject to different privacy policy, we’ll notify you in advance so you can opt out of any such new policy by deleting your account before transfer.

Protecting your data

We take the security of your personal information seriously and use appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your personal information against unauthorized or unlawful processing and against accidental loss, destruction or damage. We use encryption (HTTPS/TLS) to protect data transmitted to and from our site. Finally, for additonal security, we do not use passwords for authentication and instead email you a link to login on any device where you are not previously logged in. If you believe your email is compromised or do not have access to it anymore, please contact us.

Retaining your data

We retain PII for as long as your account is active. You may delete your Shuffle account at any time by contacting us. We will delete your profile and other PII though it may take up to 14 days for us to do so. We may also choose to anonymize certain of the information you provide to us so that it can no longer be attributed to you if we would like to retain it for longer periods of time. Please note on deleting your account, you will no longer have a Shuffle profile. Your profile or content may show up in search engines for a few days until their indexes are updated.
